Season 2 Recap: Business & Leadership Tips From A Good Pour Podcast

As we wrap up Season 2 of A Good Pour, we’re reflecting on the invaluable business tips and inspiring stories shared by some of our incredible guests. From leadership advice to building strong teams, these highlights will empower you to do your best work in business and beyond.

Key Business Tips from Our Guests

Jason Elkins: One of my favorite guests from this season, Jason Elkins, shared invaluable insights on business and communication. He taught us the importance of listening more than talking—an essential skill for any leader. He also emphasized saying no to work that doesn’t align with your core values and staying in your lane by outsourcing what you can’t do or don’t want to do. And when building relationships, following up is crucial, whether that’s through a simple thank you or an introduction.

DJ’s Storytelling: DJ highlighted the power of storytelling, especially through video, to connect with your audience. He reminded us that telling our authentic stories makes us relatable and memorable. It’s not about selling but creating a connection. Stories are what build trust, and when we share them, we help others see who we are and why we do what we do.

Erin Birch on Asking for Help: Erin taught us the importance of knowing when to ask for help. As a nonprofit leader, she’s learned that it’s okay to lean on others when needed, whether it’s for expertise or support. And when it comes to leadership, seeing the person in front of you—hearing their needs and responding with empathy—is crucial for fostering a positive work culture.

Jennifer Reedy on Core Values: Jennifer’s advice resonated deeply: core values are the backbone of any business. When you define and live by your values, it shapes your culture and how you treat both your customers and employees. She stressed that investing in employees is an investment in the long-term success of your business.

Kate Ritchie and Surrounding Yourself with Good People: Kate reminded us of one of the simplest yet most effective business strategies: surround yourself with good people. Whether it’s a dedicated team, a supportive board, or strategic partners, the people you work with can either make or break your success.

Jared Stancil on Supporting Employees: Jared shared his unique approach to supporting employees by offering access to resources like a chaplain. This confidential support helps employees when they’re facing challenges, and Jared’s commitment to investing in them creates a culture of care and trust.

Troy Smith on Maintaining a Positive Mindset: One of the most uplifting guests of the season, Troy talked about the importance of positivity. He reminded us to focus on the present, take care of today, and not let worries about the future overwhelm us. His perspective on time and relationships as life’s two most valuable currencies is something we can all apply.

And More! Throughout the season, we heard from so many guests who shared their experiences with leadership, investing in people, and doing work that matters. Whether it’s through volunteerism, building community, or simply showing up every day, the common thread was this: good work requires intentionality, empathy, and a commitment to others.
